Mistakes you must avoid
|
Most of us tend to
commit some common mistakes while speaking or writing in English. You can avoid them very easily, if you weigh your words
and think before you communicate.
It is just not true that because the mistakes are common and
widespread they cease to be mistakes. Particularly, for people whose mother
tongue is English or those who learned English with love, these mistakes
can look awful.
Given below are some very common, but wrong, usages. Ponder over
them
and try to avoid them in English-speaking societies:
1. 'Rain is coming' this is generally a problem with those who
translate directly from their mother tongue in to English. The correct
expression is 'It is raining'
2. You must stick up to him no matter what happens. (The correct
usage
is 'stick to him').
3. I am not on talking terms with him. Talking terms is incorrect.
Say 'speaking terms').
4. I wanted to run away, but he held me by the hand and would not
leave off. ('Let go' is the correct expression.
'Leave off' means 'discontinue'
or 'desist from').
5. I have come late because I was stuck up on the way. ('Stuck
up' means
proud, not getting stuck. Therefore, the correct usage is 'I got
stuck
on the way').
6. He is finding it difficult to make both his ends meet. (Leave
'his'
out if you do not want to cause laughter. 'Both ends meet' is
the
correct expression).
7. You are going to California, is it not? (The correct usage is
'aren't you').
8. Prices are rising up (anything can 'rise' only 'up',
never 'down'. So
leave 'up' severely alone! ).
9. You'll do this for me, is it not? (The correct usage is 'won't you')?
9. We must do our best, isn't it? (The correct usage is 'mustn't we')?
10. He is a wonderful fellow, is it not?(The correct usage is
'isn't
he')?
