Designing is one area where you do need sound knowledge of using one of the html editors  like frontpage or dreamweaver and a good knowledge of image editing software like adobe Flash or director.

The Difference:

The basic difference between product designing and Web-site designing is mainly in the format sizes.

Product Designing :-

In the product design (cover pages, inside icons etc.), you is no size restriction as the customer will most probably be offline while using it. In addition, you can make very definite predictions about the operating systems and capacity of computers they will be using. So, you can use flash, animations and any other value-adds rather freely. 

Web-Site Designing :-

However, if you are designing a web site, you are compelled to minimize the size of each page as time consumed to download is directly proportional to the volume of the content i.e. the bigger the size, the more the time taken to download.

You can minimize the time to download by using crisp icons instead of large images. You can also give the site a professional look by using right font colors and limited images. 

Similarly, you should choose colors to suit the test and moods of  target users.
