A career in ITES industry:
Module 1
|
|
Introduction
Twenty-three-year-old Surekha rushes to the bus stop to go to the Hitech city. She works at AG, a division of the giant American company Assurance General Inc. A typical day for Surekha begins at 7 p.m. (8 a.m. US time), as she begins calling the AG credit-card holders in faraway places like Maryland and Washington to remind them to pay their bills. "Hi. My name is Nancy (her name is changed to Nancy) and I’m calling from AG," she says in her friendliest voice. People answering Nancy's calls have no way of knowing that she is sitting in Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, or that her real name is Surekha and that she picked up the American accent by attending a training class at AG, Hyderabad.
AG, Hyderabad, is teeming with such people who take incoming calls, bounced by satellite to India. Most have never set foot in the United States. But they spend a large chunk of every day (or night) chasing credit-card debtors, assessing medical claims, answering customer queries, and doing such other activities.
There are many companies such as DELL, Deloitte, HSBC, and British Airways, who are benefiting from IT-enabled services being provided in India.
What is ITES?
ITES stands for Information Technology-Enabled Services. This means services delivered over telecom networks or the Internet to a range of business areas. In simple terms, IT-enabled services are functions performed in a country different from the one where the end-products are delivered; that is, delivered over telecommunication or data network.
Some of the IT-enabled services are:
Call centers, Content development / animation, Medical transcription, Medical insurance claim, Payroll management, Back office operations, Revenue accounting and other ancillary operations, Logistics management, Insurance claims processing, HR services, Legal databases, Network consultancy and management, Engineering and design, Web services, etc.
Scope of ITES:
Every industry is expected to become IT-enabled by the year 2008. NASSCOM has estimated the turnover of the IT enabled services industry five years from now will reach Rs.81,000.00 crore, and the number of employees at 1.1 million.
Why India?
Our country offers many advantages as an IT-enabled services destination for major global companies:
· A virtual 12-hour time zone difference with the USA
· Talented work force who can speak English fluently
· The cost of qualified personnel is amongst the lowest in the world
· Support of Government of India for all IT based industries
· Stable legislative and economic framework.
What are the requirements to make a career in ITES?
1. Graduate/postgraduate or a diploma holder
2. Should have excellent communication skills (Business English: Fluency in written and spoken English).
3. Should possess computer knowledge
4. Should have analytical skills
5. Should have essential soft skills
The selection process:
There are a series of tests that a person should undertake:
· Written test – this is to gauze the depth of knowledge
· Interview – this is to test the speaking skills
· Group discussion
· Presentation in a small group
· Voice test + Listening skill test — followed by a written test based on the listening task.
· Psychometric test
· Final interview
The personality traits:
1. Carrying out tasks with attention to every aspect. Being industrious and punctual.
2. A natural tendency to be outgoing. Able to enjoy the company of others, able to interact freely and be approachable.
3. Preference for social situations, activity, and the public environment

With such skills in hand, you can be sure of making your career in ITES.
