A career in ITES industry: Module 7

Personal management skills for ITES

Karuna is a graduate who wants to establish her career in the ITES industry. She joined a call center training institute and worked hard becoming one of its toppers. Now, she got a job in an MNC. But the problem was that she had to work on the night shift. Initially it was all fun, but gradually she began to face some problems. She wasn't able to cope with the night shift timings. It took her a long time to adjust, but she still felt uncomfortable. So, she quit the ITES sector and is now searching for a job elsewhere.

Her friend Tara, who joined the same company, is happy. She managed her time and her social life well. She is now planning to take an internal test to climb the corporate ladder. She is very happy with the pay package and other benefits.

Well, just like Karuna and Tara, you may often have to work on night shift or the early hour shift. In the ITES industry, it is very important that you develop some skills that will help you to cope with your work and make you an efficient executive.

To become an efficient executive, you need to plan. If you don’t plan, you may end up spending a large amount of your quality time on unproductive or trivial activities.

Planning helps you to
· utilize your time productively and assess your current position
· work out the details such as, who, what, and how, involved in achieving your target
· evaluate whether the outcome of the plan is worth the effort involved
· achieve your targets effectively and efficiently
· assess the impact of your plan on the organization
· envision the future, and meet deadlines.

With proper planning, you can strike a balance between personal life and work life. As the work requires you to work in shifts and during nights, planning plays a crucial role. But many a time, we find people getting stressed. Well, what is stress?

Shekhar is working in an MNC. He is a very busy executive handling many projects. His day starts with meetings and appointments with co-workers and executives. He is a very cheerful and hard-working person. People like to spend time with him. However, these days, he is very irritated and not able to concentrate on his work. He is very rude to his employees and complains of headache and burning sensation in the stomach. Off late he started scolding his subordinates. Now everyone is scared of talking to him. Even at home he throws tantrums and spends sleepless nights. Finally he approached the doctor. The doctor diagnosed Shekhar to be stressed out.

"Stress is people's reaction to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed upon them".
Every job brings its own pressures and demands; these are an unavoidable part of working life. All of the external demands, pressures, threats, changes, conflicts, challenges, and difficulties we face can trigger our body's stress response. When the demands are not met pressure becomes intolerable and leads to stress.

Look at the following:
· Ravi is stressed when he is given a promotion in the office with new and tough responsibility like clinching an important deal from foreign lands and he did it successfully.
· Rekha was stressed as she was going to write her final exams for which she prepared well and worked hard. However, while taking the exam she forgot all the answers and fared miserably.

Did you observe that in each of the above cases, the individual experiences stress. Stress is a feature of our lives, at work or at home. However, not all stress is negative. There is positive stress, too, and it is called Eustress.

Positive stress helps us to:
· concentrate on the task, and
· perform it to our fullest potential or capacity
· it motivates us to work and achieve high standards of performance
After we have completed the task, positive stress energizes and motivates us to accept another challenge, and it helps us relax our own mind and body.

To be a successful ITES executive, you need to manage stress. The question now is, how to manage stress. You have seen that the main reason for stress is anxiety and uncertainty. Many people try to reduce stress by either avoiding the stressful situation or by making efforts to reduce its impact by working in the stressful situation. It is not a good method to avoid stressful situations because you have to work in stress and cannot constantly avoid every situation. There are some temporary measures as well as permanent measures to cope with stress.

Some of the temporary stress relievers are:

· Sharing your stress: When you are stressed, you can talk about it to the friends or family members. It helps to talk to someone about your concerns and worries.
· Writing the experience: Writing out the experience also helps to cope with your anger.
· Procrastination of task: To momentarily forget stress, you can just postpone the task. However, it is important to realize the fact that at one time or the other the stressor has to be experienced.

Now look at some methods of managing stress effectively in the long run:

· Managing time effectively: Organize tasks by their importance and difficulty.
· Positive thinking- Proactive attitude: Adopt a proactive attitude. Go forward and start doing things to make your position better. This helps in combating distress and completing the task.
· Exercise: When you're nervous, angry, or upset, you can release the pressure through exercise or physical activity.
· Be kind to yourself: Don't be over-critical of yourself or put yourself down. Recognize that everyone makes mistakes sometimes.
· Do something you enjoy each day: Work a crossword puzzle, or in a garden, write in your journal, read a book or magazine, try a new recipe, make something with your hands (craft work), or work on a project).
· Learn to say 'no': If you are stressed due to too many commitments, you can say 'no' if you do not want to take on a new responsibility. Delegate some of your current commitments to others, if possible.
· Develop a habit: Develop a habit like singing or developing a garden or even a brisk walk every day. Such things will help you relax and have fun.
· The art of relaxation: Yoga and meditation help you to relax. You can also sit quietly in a place and imagine a nice location/scenery in your mind's eye. The power of imagination can relieve you from your stress immediately.

Now that you know how to manage stress, you can plan, get your priorities right and make your life better.

ITES — the right career option is calling you. Sky is the limit for a hardworking person like you! Go ahead!
