"In the digital world,
one word is worth thousand pictures"

You can play two major roles in the digital world if you have good writing skills. Now, by good writing skills, I do not mean the style of Arundhati Roy. I mean that you should have sound command on the language and the passion to share what you know. If you have them, you can become a writer in a prosperous Internet company. Most people are looking for two types of writers. These are

                   1. Functional Writers
                   2. Web Writers

1.  Functional writers :-

These are writers who help the company for building the product. Most dotcom companies today are making information products like e-books, software packages. These products need well written thoroughly researched content and help files.

For example, in our GRE product, we employed more than 20 Ph.Ds to generate questions, solutions and strategies. Similarly, our vocabulary builder WordMine needed content writers for generating words, meanings, exercises, games etc.

If you have talent of explaining complex stuff in an easy to read manner and you possess decent knowledge in any field, then find out a company that is making products in the area of your interest. Tell them how well you can write for their customers. Chances are that you will get a decent job if you are as good as you say.

2.  Web Writers :-

Writing a web site that attracts, keeps and makes the visitor buy the products is the most important aspect of web business. This kind of writing does not involve as much functional knowledge as functional writing. But, you have to understand the product and the typical customer a lot more deeply to become an effective writer.

  • You are responsible to make the user buy the product and stick to you for your future products.

  •  Web copy writers have to write home page that generates enough interest in the visitor to explore the site further.

  • You should have articles providing enough credibility and excitement about the services/products that the site is offering.

  • Finally you need a  sale copy that generates enough emotional appeal for the user to buy the product
    instantly.

Most of the people who come to me for writer's job do not understand the fundamental laws of web writing. There are excellent resources for you to pick up these skills. An immediate resource that I can suggest are the free tutorials on Joe Robson's site
